Industry News-The 3 things that have the biggest impact on your kitchen remodel cost

BArich Hardware-What does a kitchen remodel cost? Thankfully, that’s not a million dollar question. But if we had a dollar for every time we were asked, “how much will my kitchen remodel cost” we might just be close to having a million dollars. The truth is your kitchen remodel costs can be anything you want it to be.

Here are 3 things that will have a big impact on your kitchen remodel cost.

1. Define your definition of a kitchen remodel. On the less expensive end that could be new cabinet hardware, a fresh coat of paint on the walls (or cabinets for you ambitious few) or maybe even a new countertop to freshen up a drab, dated kitchen. It could also be that you are moving and want to make some changes to improve the resale value of the home. Be clear on your expectations early on so you don’t get too charmed by the influence of remodeling shows and websites like Houzz that can quickly make your ideas for the kitchen bigger (as well as the kitchen remodel cost).

2. Understand that kitchen remodel costs will vary based on the size of your kitchen. A small kitchen design may see less cost on cabinets, countertops and even appliances if smaller, space-saving sizes are considered for the space. A larger kitchen remodeling project that involves moving walls or plumbing may increase spending in certain areas as well. Be careful though. You can find your kitchen remodeling costs growing quicker than you expected in any size kitchen. The National Kitchen & Bath Association identified that kitchen remodeling costs on average will break down as above.(See chart)

3. Consider your future. Is this your forever home that you plan to retire in? The longer you plan to stay in your home the better the chance your kitchen remodel costs will be higher. And the truth is, you should splurge a little on cabinets, countertops or appliances (or maybe all) to fully enjoy your space. If you don’t plan to stay, then consider what makes the best sense for you and manage your kitchen remodel costs accordingly.

The long standing guide is that a kitchen remodel cost should be 5-10% of the home’s value. Depending on how you define the above 3 things, your kitchen remodel cost could be below or above that or maybe just right in between. The choice is all yours.

Industry News-Sharp, Foxconn Push to Close Deal After a Month of Delays

BArich Hardware-Sharp Corp. and Foxconn Technology Group said they are pushing to close the rescue deal for the Japanese manufacturer that has been held up by disagreement for more than a month.
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Foxconn’s flagship company, said on Sunday it will hold a board meeting on March 30 as scheduled, where it may discuss the Sharp deal depending on the stage of negotiations, according to a statement to the Taiwan stock exchange. Sharp said today it aims to reach the agreement as soon as possible, and will promptly make information public if it reaches a decision requiring disclosure.
Sharp’s banks are ready to push back the deadline for most of the company’s 510 billion yen ($4.5 billion) in loans and credit lines beyond March 31, people with knowledge of the matter said earlier. That would give the Japanese maker of Aquos televisions more time to reach a renegotiated deal to be acquired by billionaire Terry Gou’s Foxconn. Sharp shares climbed the most in three weeks in Tokyo on Monday.
“Some investors were beginning to fear that Foxconn was going to walk away from the deal,” said Masahiko Ishino, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities. “The shares are rebounding on renewed confidence that the investment seems on track.”

Sharp, along with the banks, is aiming for its directors to endorse a final proposal by March 31, one person has said, although the board could meet for a vote earlier if a deal is presented. At the same time, an extension by the banks would give Sharp more time to negotiate a final agreement in April.
The shares of Sharp rose 4 percent to 131 yen at the close in Tokyo, their biggest jump since March 7. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average advanced 0.8 percent.
The extension may be as long as a month, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the decision hasn’t been publicly announced. Gou agreed a month ago to buy Sharp for more than 600 billion yen, but has held off on signing a final agreement while his advisers scrutinize the company’s finances.
Foxconn is seeking to cut the amount it will pay for equity in Sharp to about 389 billion yen, one person familiar with the matter has said. The Taiwanese company will probably still pay about 100 billion yen for preferred shares that the banks own, though the payment may be delayed, the person said.
Finish Line
More than a month has passed since Sharp’s board backed Foxconn’s bailout over a competing offer from Innovation Network Corp. of Japan. In the interim, Foxconn’s Gou put the brakes on the deal while he seeks more clarity on Sharp’s performance in the current quarter, people familiar with the matter have said.
A reduction in the value of Foxconn’s offer would put it closer to the bid from INCJ. The Japanese government-backed investment fund had offered about 300 billion yen for Sharp, all of which would have been put into the company through the purchase of additional shares.

Industry News-Samsung could lose in more ways when Apple launches iPhone 7

Industry News-Samsung could lose in more ways when Apple launches iPhone 7

BArich Hardware-Taiwanese company, TSMC, New Chip for iPhone7 Outperforming Samsung’s.

Up until now, both Samsung and TSMC had been making chipsets for Apple’s iPhones. However, new reports suggest Apple has inked a deal with TSMC to solely produce A10 chips for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While the chip is reported to go in full production in June, TSMC is believed to have won over Apple due to its 10-nanometer fabrication process, which allows for better performance and power efficiency than Samsung, The Electronic Times reports.

For the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6S Plus, Apple sourced the A9 chip to Samsung and TSMC. However, Chipworks revealed that Samsung made A9 processors are 10 percent smaller in size compared to the ones made by TSMC. The teardown further reveals that Samsung chipsets are made from 14nm fabrication process, whereas TSMC ones are made with 16nm fabrication process. And while one would believe Samsung A9 processors would be more efficient, in reality, the TSMC ones turned out to outperform the ones made by Samsung.

This could be a big setback to Samsung, which now relies greater on its semiconductor and components business as its smartphone division profits have gone down.

World News-Taiwan thanks U.S. President Obama for Interpol bid support

BArich Hardware- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement Saturday to thank United States President Barack Obama for his support of Taiwan’s participation in the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) as an observer.

President Obama signed a bill a day earlier which requires the U.S. secretary of state to develop a strategy to obtain observer status for Taiwan in the Interpol and other international groups.

The bill was sent to the White House for Obama to sign into law after it cleared the House of Representatives and the Senate earlier this month.

“Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall transmit to Congress a report, in unclassified form, describing the United States strategy to endorse and obtain observer status for Taiwan in appropriate international organizations, including INTERPOL, and at other related meetings, activities, and mechanisms thereafter,” according to the text of the new legislation.

It reflects that the U.S. has paid great attention to Taiwan’s participation in international community and that the relations between the two nations are at their best, the ministry said in its statement.

President-elect Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) also expressed gratitude to Obama and pledged that her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will continue to pursue Taiwan’s participation in international organizations after she assumes power in May.

Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), secretary general of the DPP, cited Tsai as saying that President Obama’s support will further encourage Taiwan to make contributions to the promotion of regional peace and will improve the efficiency of joint efforts to combat transnational crimes in the Asian region, as well as in the international community as a whole.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) was a full member of Interpol starting in 1964 through its National Police Administration, but lost its membership in 1984, when the People’s Republic of China applied to join the organization.

Taiwan has had trouble gaining membership or participating in many international organizations because of objections from China, which sees Taiwan as part of Chinese territory and therefore ineligible for membership as a separate entity.

Industry News-The latest bathroom trends for 2016

BArich Hardware-Is your bathroom in desperate need of an update? Be inspired with these must-have design trends for 2016 and get a bathroom you will enjoy spending time in.

We asked six designers for their style predictions.

Time for tranquility

“Bathrooms are often the only place where people regularly have time to themselves,” Sydney interior designer Sarah Davison says. For that reason bathroom design should “create a refuge of serenity and personal luxury. The trends I embrace are for natural materials and unique, layered textures,” she says.

Go natural

Recent bathroom trade shows in Paris and Milan showed that 2016 trends will focus around natural materials, designer Katrina Malyn, of building design company Design Projector, says.

“We will move further away from artificial materials,” Malyn predicts. “Natural stone and timber will appear in more and more bathrooms. Timber vanities, seats and accessories showing timber grain will become more prevalent. Timber will be more often used for bathroom floors and even in taps.”

Timber will continue to be a prominent feature in our bathrooms, television personality and interior design blogger Katrina Chambers agrees. From wall features and open shelving, to hardwood floors and even timber vanities. “Make sure you bring in some earthy elements to balance the space out,” she says. “Greenery, whites and a patterned tile work beautifully with tactile timber surfaces.”

Make it monochrome

“Black and white remain timeless,” Clare Barnes, an interior decorator at Freedom, says. “Whether you are freshening up with new towels and soap dispensers, or completely changing the space.”

Matt black is in, she says. “Consider a gorgeous pendant over the vanity or bath. Change your tapware to matt black for a sleek, classy look.”

White freestanding baths will also be very much in demand in 2016, Barnes predicts. “Linked with black velvet ottomans and a sexy crystal light fitting, they give the bathroom an air of elegance and a sense of pampering.

“The white Carrara marble look, but in a porcelain tile, is incredibly popular and will continue to do so for 2016,” Melbourne-based interior designer and decorator Jane Gorman says. “The beauty of the porcelain tile is that it doesn’t absorb like marble and is maintenance-free. It will give you the luxury and glamorous look without the price tag.”

Be bold with brass

“Brass is really on trend this season,” Barnes says. “With either a beautiful light fitting, candle or even a shower caddy. Injecting metallics into a bathroom gives off such a glamorous, warm feel.”

Sydney interior stylist Lisa Burdus, of Rooms By Design, says she too is now using black, pewter, brass or aged brass tapware in most of her designs and very little chrome.

Moroccan style

Burdus loves the personality of a pattern and predicts Moroccan-style patterned floor tiles with plain tiles on the walls will be big in 2016.

After travelling to Marrakesh, Davison says she is “a bit obsessed with Moroccan Tadelakt in bathrooms. This is a seamless waterproof render you can use in showers and even form baths from. The result is soft and luminous, a bit like the inside of a seashell. I find it creates a much more relaxed feel than tiled walls with grids of grout.”

Pick patterns

“Patterns are becoming richer,” Malyn says. “We are slowly going away from minimalist all-white simple form. As always happens in times of economic stagnation and downturn, people resort to brighter colours and busier patterns to introduce some variety and movement into their daily life. We will see playful combinations of materials, patterns and sizes.”

Instead of bath mats use small rugs such as small kilims or cow hides for an adult en suite, Burdus suggests.

Hexagonal tiles

Another trend that will clearly dominate this year is the hexagonal tile, Malyn says. “From small mosaics to larger and bolder hexagons used for feature walls, they will be bringing freshness into our bathrooms this year. The success of hexagonal tiles comes from the organic shape that catches the eye and creates various associations, from animals’ carapace and skin patterns to snowflakes and minerals.”

Balance lighting

Davison says: “A balance of natural, task and mood lighting is important in bathrooms for functionality and atmosphere.”

In a recent project seen here, there is a circular skylight above the shower. “There’s nothing better than having a shower in sunlight,” she says.

Niches with low-voltage lighting are also another trend that will continue in 2016, Gorman says.

Add art

You may not think of your bathroom as an art space but Burdus does. “I always hang art and style the room so it feels inviting to spend time there rather than just somewhere to shower and brush your teeth,” she says.

Industry News-Google’s AlphaGo wins fifth match against top Korean Go player

BArich Hardware-The Google artificial intelligence (AI) program AlphaGo won the fifth and final game of a five-game match against top Korean Go player Lee Se-dol Tuesday with four wins and one loss, and was awarded prize money of US$1 million.

Recovering from an early mistake, the AI program, developed by Google Inc.’s DeepMind unit, came from behind to get past the 18-time Go world champion in the fifth game, which lasted about five hours.

“AlphaGo wins game 5! One of the most incredible games ever. To come back from the initial big mistake against Lee Sedol was mind-blowing!!!” DeepMind’s founder Demis Cassabas wrote on Twitter to announce the fifth game result.

Meanwhile, Lee, a professional 9-dan Go player admitted that he struggled to deal with the pressure.

AlphaGo generated widespread attention when an article published in the journal Nature explained how DeepMind had succeeded in making the AI program master the game of Go, achieving a 99.8 percent win rate against other Go programs.

The article, co-authored by programmer Aja Huang (黃士傑) of Taiwan and David Silver, who both work at DeepMind, noted that AlphaGo recently also beat three-time European Go champion Fan Hui five times out of five under tournament conditions.

Huang, who obtained a sixth-dan ranking as an advanced amateur Go player in 2007, sat opposite Lee during those three matches, placing the stones on behalf of AlphaGo once the program decided on its moves.

Prior to the fifth game on Tuesday, the Korea Baduk Association, South Korea’s top Go federation, announced that it would grant AlphaGo an honorary “ninth-dan” rating, the same rating that Lee has earned as one of the top Go players.

Google had announced previously that it would donate the prize money to charity organizations if it won the five-game series.

Industry News-Kitchen and Bath Upgrades Top Homeowner Investments in AIA Home Trends Survey

BArich Hardware-Universal design, LED lighting, and high-end upgrades were the most prominent design trends in both kitchens and baths in Q4 of 2015.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has released the fourth quarter results of their Home Design Trends Survey, which highlight trends in residential design features that emerged in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The AIA’s most recent report finds that as residential construction activity and demand for residential design continues to rise, homeowners are choosing to spend money on their kitchens and bathrooms, more so than other areas of the house. The most popular kitchen upgrades include electronic charging stations and high-end appliances. Homeowners are still adding larger pantry spaces, double islands, and drinking water filtration systems, but less prominently than in 2014.

In the bathroom, the survey showed that popular features include doorless and large walk-in showers, radiant heated floors, and upscale showers. LED lighting was also a top design trend in both kitchens and baths in 2015, charting a two and three point increase from 2014 in those rooms respectively; universal design upgrades also rated highly.

“Because kitchens are so central to the home, people feel it’s important to spend time and money selecting materials and appliances that reflect who they are and make them feel good,” said Dawn Zuber, AIA, Chair of the AIA’s Custom Residential Architects Network in a release. “Architectural lighting is a key component in good kitchen design, too, as it allows people not only to see what they are doing, but to highlight the cabinets, countertops, and appliances that are important to them.”

“Many of the new kitchen features that were really growing in popularity a few years ago have leveled off, such as larger pantry space and double islands,” AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, said in a release. “Popularity in LED lighting and upper-end appliances continues to grow at a strong rate.”

Baker added, “Though business conditions for residential architects remain solid, recovery from the Great Recession has leveled off. Remodeling and renovations continue to account for the core of the residential billings.”
